Last night the temperature dropped and the rain turned to snow and the water on my sidewalk and parking lot turned to ice. I was reminded of the line from the Paul Simon song 'Slip Slidin' Away' which went, "You know the nearer your destination / The more you're slip slidin' away." Think about it - you drive safely 5 miles to work and then slip 20' from the building entrance. So I tossed some rock salt over the well traveled areas of my sidewalk and parking lot to hasten the melting process and make the footing better. My homeowner and business liability policies would defend me if I'm sued by someone who slips on my property but a few dollars worth of salt will likely prevent thousands of dollars of medical bills, much less pain and suffering by the injured person, plus my time and expense being involved in a lawsuit. The salt won't hurt your sidewalk's blood pressure - use it liberally!
