adding youthful drivers to policy

November 19, 2014 -

Should you add your 16 year old son to your auto policy.  Your neighbor advises not to add him since it would increase the premium and you would be covered anyway if he were to have an accident.  The neighbor is right on both counts but what wasn't said was how the premium would be affected if your son is involved in an accident.  The company would pay the claim but would then calculate the premium you should have been paying for the young driver from the time he got his license to the time of the accident.  Depending on how long he had his license this could result in several thousand dollars in premium payable at one time!  Taking into account that young drivers are up to 4 times more likely to have an accident than everyone else, not disclosing them could result in a big hit to the family's pocketbook.  Bottom line, when in doubt consult with an independent insurance agent not your neighbor.
