This past weekend Debbie and I stayed at a bed & breakfast in Seneca Falls, NY, home of Women's Rights National Historical Park. Okay, you ask, what has this to do with insurance? Plenty! In addition to some wine tasting we visited the Women's Rights National Historical Park. The first Women's Rights Convention held in Senca Falls in 1848 began the movement that sought women's right to vote and equal protection under the law. Despite the monumental gains made over the last 166 years the potential for discrimination continues to exist in the workplace. Today, unlike in 1848, there are remedies for employees who believe they have been unfairly treated in the workplace. Failure to promote, retalliation, wrongful discharge, sexual harrassment or violence of any kind - are some of the activities that could occur with or without the employer's direct knowldege. Employment Practice Liability Insurance (EPLI) will defend an employer against the above mentioned offences and pay a settlement up to the limit of the policy in the event an employee's suit is successful. Insurance companies usually require the employer to have an Employee Handbook and to institute best practices to reduce the the likelihood of a claim. In 1848 discrimination and lack of rights were the order of the day for women. We've come a long way.
