fuses and circuit breakers

2014-06-09

Ever notice your kitchen lights momentarily dim every time the refrigerator motor begins running?  If so the chances are good your electrical service is barely meeting the power needs of your house.  Many insurance companies now require a house electrical system be protected by circuit breakers with a minimum service size of at least 100 amps.  Electrical needs in the 1950's and prior were minimal and so were the circuit boards.  Whether you own a house or are looking to buy one you should consider engaging an electrician to to evaluate your electrical system.  Fuses, knob & tube wiring, low amperage, scarcity of outlets, lack of GFI (Ground Fault Interrupter) protection and other issues could put you at risk of a fire that could cause loss of life and property.  An up to date electrical system will result in a safer house and could make you eligible for a lower insurance premium.
